A 13-year-old boy accidentally shot a 5-year-old boy in the leg at a home in the 500 block of FM 843 Thursday night.

Capt. Alton Lenderman of the Angelina County Sheriff’s Office said that at about 8:30 p.m. the 13-year-old boy, a 7-year-old child and the 5-year-old boy, who is a neighbor, were alone in a room playing video games.

“The 13-year-old was playing around with a shotgun and it went off, hitting the 5-year-old in the leg,” Lenderman said. “Basically, right now it looks accidental, but they brought the 13-year-old (to the sheriff’s office) to give a statement.”

The 5-year-old boy was taken by helicopter to a Shreveport, Louisiana, hospital following the incident.

Lenderman said he does not believe the child’s injury to be life-threatening, but he was not sure of the severity of the wound. Though no charges have been filed as of Friday, Lenderman said it is possible the adults living in the home could face criminal negligence charges for allowing a child to have unattended access to a firearm.

“It is still under investigation, but it is a Class A misdemeanor if the child discharges the firearm and causes death or serious bodily injury,” Lenderman said.
