James Elmer Owens was born on January 11, 1935 in Grapeland, TX to John R. and Lillian Owens. He passed away on July 4, 2019 at the age of 84.

Jim attended Garland High School where he met the love of his life Charlotte Jean McCord. He then attended Navarro Junior College and Austin College where he played quarterback and earned his bachelor’s degree. He went on to achieve his master’s degree at Texas Tech University. While in Lubbock he got his first head coaching stint with Lubbock High School. Jim had a distinguished career in sports where he coached at numerous programs including Tarleton State, and Henderson County Junior College where they achieved a championship season, as well as being a professional scout for the Detroit Lions for over 20 years. After football Jim retired and was voted to both the Garland High School and Austin College Sports Halls of Fame. Jim was an active member at First United Methodist Church in Athens and was a member of Methodist Men for almost 50 years. He volunteered at Friends of the Library at FUMC Athens, Meals on Wheels, and Disciples Medical Clinic. He was a great golfer and shot his age, or better, 3 times. Even for all his accomplishments, he is remembered by his family and friends as a rock of love and faithfulness. He was his family’s biggest supporter and cheerleader throughout their lives.

His survivors include daughter Julie Alston and spouse Todd of Lufkin; son John and spouse Felipe Medrado of Houston; son Brian Owens and spouse Julie of Mansfield; grandchildren: Ben Owens and wife Winnie of Hong Kong, Stephen Alston and wife Jacklyn, Meghan Owens, Elise Alston, Karli Owens and Bayli Owens; great grandchildren Naomi Lauren, & Charlotte Marie; sisters: Anita Mitchell and husband Don, and Margie Hazelip and husband Bill; sister-in-law Roberta Svien; He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Charlotte Jean Owens, his parents: John R. Owens and Lillian Owens, brother John Owens and wife Jodie.

Pallbearers are Ben Owens, Stephen Alston, Vic Vaughan, Shawn Vaughan, Blake Vaughan, and Todd Alston. Honorary Pallbearers are the Apostles Sunday School Class at FUMC and his ACC golf Buddies.

Visitation will be 5-7 pm, Sunday at Autry’s Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2019, at First United Methodist Church in Athens with burial to Follow at Athens Cemetery.
