The Lufkin Majors raced out to a huge early lead before holding on late on their way to a 10-6 win over Bellville in the opening game of the Section 1 tournament in College Station Saturday night.

Lufkin put up four runs in the first inning only to see Bellville cut that lead in half when it answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame.

However, the local all-stars opened things up with two runs in the fourth inning, three more in the fifth and another in the sixth, taking a 10-2 lead.

But they still had to sweat out a few tense moments in the bottom of the sixth inning when Bellville put up four runs and brought the potential tying run to the plate with the bases loaded.

Lufkin survived when reliever Francisco Serrano induced a groundout to end the threat.

Kolt Larsen was strong on the mound once again as he recorded his second win in as many outings for Lufkin in pitching into the sixth inning. Serrano then came in the game to get the final outs.

Lufkin reached double digits in the run column for the second straight game thanks in large part to another balanced hitting night from the entire lineup.

Austin Brown, Michael Sullivan, Aidan Bonacci, Grant Stafford, Jack Bowers, Nick Hodges and Larsen each contributed at least one hit while every position in the batting order reached base at least one time in a complete team effort that kept the pressure on Bellville throughout the night.

With the win, Lufkin advances to the winner’s bracket where it will face the Smithville/Austin winner at 8 p.m. Monday.

A win in that game would move Lufkin into Wednesday night’s championship game.
