Woodland Heights Medical Center is proud to be the first and most experienced NICU in Deep East Texas. Our care teams are committed to providing love and support to our tiniest patients, keeping them close to home.
The 15-bed NICU provides access to advanced equipment and resources in an environment that supports and strengthens the immune systems of those patients. With 24-hour neonatology coverage, our team consists of neonatal nurse practitioners, specially-trained nurses, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, dietitians and more. The team is led by Dr. Linda Chase, the chief of neonatology. Chase moved to Lufkin about four years ago to take this position and we are so glad she decided to make Angelina County her home.
About a month ago, we celebrated five years of our NICU being open with a “birthday” party inviting all our previous NICU patients and their families for a day of fun and catching up with the physician, nurses and staff that cared for them. Seeing them thrive and grow is the best reward and the bonds between caregiver and patient is quite special.
Along with the NICU, Woodland Heights has a full-time lactation consultant on staff, offering breastfeeding assistance to new moms in the hospital and even after discharge. Free childbirth classes are offered the first Saturday of each month, where new parents are provided with information to help them be physically and emotionally prepared for the childbirth experience.
Topics such as birth certificate, pain management and the stages of labor are discussed, along with a tour of the Women’s Center. Infant feeding also is taught during those classes.
Woodland Heights is the only hospital in the area (and one of only seven in the state of Texas) to have earned the Perinatal Care Certification from The Joint Commission. This certification is awarded to hospitals committed to achieving integrated, coordinated and patient-centered care for mothers and their newborns.
