NACOGDOCHES — The 88th Texas Legislature opened Tuesday, and state Rep. Travis Clardy (R-Nacogdoches) expects big things for East Texas as lawmakers wrestle with how to spend the state’s $32.7 billion budget surplus and decide the future of Stephen F. Austin State University.

Clardy already is working in conjunction with University of Texas System officials on legislation that will allow Stephen F. Austin State University to join the system.
