Shelbi Hughes

Shelbi Hughes, executive director of Winnie Berry Animal Shelter, holds 6-month-old Bonnie, a black domestic shorthair cat who Hughes said is available for adoption.

It took Shelbi Hughes a minute to gather her thoughts after saying goodbye to the Winnie Berry Humane Society’s longest resident, Pearl, as she went to her new home.

Pearl, a catahoula mix, was first adopted in January 2022 and had been returned twice for behavioral issues, Hughes said. She wants to be in control and to herd other animals, which caused problems at her first two homes. But on Monday a family came who was ready to give her what she needed. It is one of Hughes’ favorite parts of her new job.
