Established in 1970, the Lufkin Workshop and Opportunity Center was the first program in Lufkin to begin providing day services and job opportunities for people who are mentally disabled — and it is still doing so today with the help of United Way funds, case manager Latawnya Ayres said.

“Basically, it’s a safe place for the clients to come, and they can work to earn money for their own personal expenses,” Ayres said.
