Lowther swearing in

District Judge Bob Inselmann, left, administers the oath of office to Adam Lowther, winner of the May 6 election for the Ward 6 seat on the Lufkin City Council.

Lufkin’s City Council took its first step Monday toward reducing property taxes for homeowners living within the city limits.

Due to increasing property values, the average home value is rising from $172,667 to $198,140, according to a presentation by city manager Kevin Gee. The average taxable value will increase from $164,520 to $180,858 — and a tax bill that is $85.72 higher.
