The tragic events of Sept. 7 — in which two citizens were shot and killed by local law enforcement officers after the victims allegedly threatened the officers with guns in two separate incidents — prompted our editorial team to run the headline “Gun violence escalates” above both stories on the top of the next day’s front page.

It’s not every day that we have an officer-involved shooting in Lufkin. The last one was a May 2017 incident in which a Lufkin police officer was later no-billed by a grand jury after the shooting death of an aggravated assault suspect.
