Lufkin Little League

Lufkin manager Bud Maddux talks with the Majors All-Stars during a recent practice. Lufkin opens the District 10 tournament at 7 tonight.

The boys are back in town with their sights set on another summer to remember. Before they can seek their own World Series dreams, they’ll need to take care of their own district tournament first.

The Lufkin 11-12-year-old Little League All-Stars will take their first step in front of the home fans tonight as they host the Tyler team from Rose Capital East in the District 10 tournament opener.

The district tournament features three teams with Rose Capital West getting a bye in the opening round.

The winner of tonight’s game will advance to take on Rose Capital West at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The loser will fall into an elimination game at 7 p.m. Friday.

The championship game is set for June 24 with an if-necessary game set for June 27.

Lufkin is two years removed from its only trip to the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

That season, Lufkin took home the U.S. title before falling in the World Championship game.

Last season, Lufkin was eliminated from the district tournament by a Pineywoods squad that eventually was disqualified in a later round. Pineywoods is not competing at this year’s event.

The local youngsters will once again be led by the legendary Bud Maddux, who was the manager of the U.S. champions in 2017.

Team members are Nickolas Hodges, Kolt Larsen, Aidan Bonacci, Jack Bowers, Joshua Cortines, Francisco Serrano Jr., Clayton McGuire, Sean Morado, Ryan Rasmussen, Grant Stafford, Austin Brown, Michael Sullivan and Brayden Wilson.

Another Lufkin team will begin its District 10 tournament journey at 7 tonight as the Lufkin 11U squad will take on Rose Capital West at Tyler’s Falkner Park.

The winner advances to take on Rose Capital East at 7 p.m. Tuesday while the loser falls into an elimination game at 7 p.m. Friday.

The championship game is set for 7 p.m. on June 24 with an if-necessary game set for June 27.

Team members are Jackson May, Lance Spencer, Logan Spencer, Jackson Weibe, Rocco Farrell, Miguel Flores, Lawrence Phillips, Adam Sanchez, Julian Arellano, Guillermo Gonzalez, Cooper Smith, Grant Bull and Alberto Ibarra.

The team is coached by Joey Arellano.

The Lufkin Minors will wait a few days to start their District 10 tournament as they drew a first-round bye. They will take on the Rose Capital West/Rose Capital East winner at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at Morris Frank Park.

The championship game of the tournament is set for June 24 with an if-necessary game set for June 27.

Team members are Adriel Diosdado, Antonio Segura, Cruz Zapata, Mack Slaton, Brendan Fitzgerald, Samuel Fitzgerald, Ceylan Williams, Joshua Bennett, Conner Ditsworth, Parker Hodges, Rhyder Albritton, Skylar Perez and Drew Venegas. The team is managed by Wade Fitzgerald.

Meanwhile, the Lufkin Juniors will try to repeat last year’s World Series trip, although they’ll have to wait a few more weeks due to Tyler not fielding a team in that division.

Lufkin will open the Section I tournament in Schulenberg at 8 p.m. on July 6.
